UPDATE (Sept 8th) Still learning how all of this works. I've been advised that I would need to prepay a 35% Duty Fee on my shipments, however, when I received the bill, Zonos charged me $0.00.
I sent out a batch of orders under the confusion and was told later that I would need to pay this fee out of my pocket, which was quite scary. So to see a bill of $0.00 after being told I needed to pay this fee is quite confusing. I've reached out to Zonos for more clarity to see if my products are exempt from the Duty Fee. Hopefully I hear back from them soon! For transparency, I have NOT collected Duty Fees from the customers whose orders have already gone out after the Tariff change, and I have NOT collected Duty Fees from customers whose orders are ready to go out.
I am currently holding my U.S. customers orders until I have a clear answer. Postal services here that I have spoken to/been updated by are also confused and cannot give me a clear answer.
If my products are exempt (hopefully they are) I will be fully refunding anyone who paid the 35% added charge that I have temporarily added on to my website.
-------------------------------------
Hello everyone,
I finally have a clear understanding of the newly added U.S. import policies that affect Canadian shipping.
I waited to make a statement because everyone - including postal staff - has been scrambling to figure this out, and the information kept changing. Things are only just starting to settle into place now.
Here’s what I’ve learned from Canada Post and the Zonos app (which I now use for U.S. shipments):
• When these rules first came into effect, many shipping companies paused U.S. deliveries, so finding a reliable way to ship has been extremely difficult.
• Under the new U.S. regulations, a 35% tariff must now be prepaid through the exporter and sent to U.S. Customs before Canada Post can process and ship a package.
• This change was made to avoid shipments being rejected at the border or refused at delivery and returned to sender.
• The good news: Your order will go through customs smoothly and once your order arrives, there will be no additional charges at your door. Traditionally, duties were collected upon delivery, but that is no longer the case.
I’ve also heard there may be changes coming in October to possibly overturn or lessen these policies, but nothing has been confirmed yet. I will keep you updated!
Solutions for Current Orders:
Because my products are made-to-order and these rules were implemented after your purchase:
• When your order is ready to ship, myself or a Phantomasy team member will reach out to arrange the tariff payment so your package can move smoothly through U.S. Customs.
If I do not hear back from you, we will default to the second solution:
• If you prefer, I can hold your package until there is more clarity, but I can’t provide a timeline for when (or if) the rules may change.
• If you wish to cancel, my refund policy (to cover supplies and labor already used) allows for a 50% refund.
Future Orders:
For now, a 35% tariff charge is automatically included at checkout for U.S. orders. This ensures packages can ship without border delays or unexpected charges upon delivery.
If these fees are reversed later on, I will refund you 100% of the fee you paid and remove it from future orders.
I deeply apologize for this sudden change. The majority of my customers are in the U.S., and you all mean so much to me. I am doing everything I can to adapt and make sure you continue receiving your orders without added stress.
I’ll continue sharing updates as soon as new information is confirmed, so you always know what to expect.
With love and gratitude,
The Veilsmith (Tris)
